Captain's Dinner

Throughout the voyage there are 4 Captain’s Dinners and each staff and faculty member gets invited to one (except for the Deans who get invited to all 4). The Captain’s Dinner is a formal occasion beginning with a half hour happy hour in the staff/faculty lounge and a 5 course dinner in the formal dining room. To my surprise, I was chosen to sit at the captain’s table. Better yet, I was seated directly next to him directly to his right. Directly to his left was one of my favorite faculty members on the voyage, Dr. Alicia Cook. The Dean and his wife were also at our table (Those are the two people with me in the 2nd photo below) and the Dean’s wife tried convincing us that the Captain traditionally chooses the “2 most beautiful women” to sit on either side of him and that is why we were seated there, but I am not too sure about that! In the Faculty/Staff lounge befoore dinner with Ebony, Jonathan, Vanessa, me and Paul.
The dinner was absolutely delicious. Oh yeah, and so was the wine. It started off with fresh, crispy bruchetta and then we a had thick seafood soup served with a white wine (presumably a Chardonnay but I didn’t get a good look at the label). Next we had mixed green salad with our choice of dressing. The main entrée was a choice between fish (I forget what type of fish it was) and prime rib. I chose the fish which came with julienne veggies and rice. The red wine that they served was also delicious. It was light with a creamy finish and no tannins. When the server came around for a 2nd pour, I took a glance at the label and it was a Cab. I usually don’t like Cab because it is such a bold wine, but this Cab was wonderful. Anyway, by that time I was very full. Once I got a glimpse of the dessert, I suddenly became hungry again. Dessert alone made the whole night worth it! It was a huge scoop of fried vanilla ice cream (fried with coconut) in a mango chutney with blackberries. It was TO DIE FOR!!
